  • Artist Information

Huh Sang Wook is a potter who works in the traditional Korean ‘buncheong’ technique. His work incorporates the comfort, freedom, and aesthetics of Buncheong, adding designs which illustrate buncheong’s raw beauty. Huh’s most famous and favourite from of pottery is the ‘Pyeonbyeong’ (편병), or the flattened bottle, which was steadily manufactured from the Three Kingdoms Period to the late Joseon Dynasty to carry alcohol or water. Huh’s work exclusively features traditional Asian motifs, and he achieves a peak of oriental aesthetics that cannot be seen elsewhere in the world. He is also famous for tiger and rabbit designs, which have a child-like charm and unique charisma, combining traditional and contemporary, old and young.

His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions including World Ceramic Biennale Korea and Cheongju Craft Biennale and is housed by Victoria & Albert Museum, National Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw, Musée Ariana in Geneva, Gyeonggi Ceramic Museum among others.
